At last Sunday’s Academy Awards show, the PS 22 youth chorus from Staten Island, N.Y. shared the stage for a few charming minutes. Actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway introduced the chorus of some 64 fifth-graders, who later performed “Somewhere over the Rainbow.”

As reported in a story at NPR, the chorus of mostly ten-year-olds have become a kind of viral phenomenon online. The school’s popular YouTube videos feature their covers of tunes by stars like Katy Perry, Coldplay, and Lady Gaga, with more than 4.5 million views for their rendition of “Just Dance” by Lady Gaga. Musical director Gregg Breinberg probably deserves an award, too. These kids look genuinely happy and engaged.
