Question by questionable: Which brick and mortar school has the best online degree? Which school has the best online degree program? Im only talking about schools associated with well known Brick and Mortar institutions like Harvard, Yale and so on. Please dont tell me about how great or meaningless a degree from capella, uni of phoenix, etc.. is because thats not what Im asking.

The best and most respected graduate school Im pretty sure is Harvard but does that mean a degree from their Harvard extension school is best and most respected online degree?

Some other places with extension schools that offer online degrees that come to mind are: Northeastern University MIT University of Massachusetts at Amherst Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute University of Denver University of Maryland Duke University Drexel Carnegie Mellon Penn State Ball State U Nebraska Lincoln Babson Worcester Polytechnic Institute University of Illinois Penn State Colorado State U etc Best school for business?

RoaringMice, thanks for the list. I added a few schools to it. Thanks Ill have to look into Babson, Duke, and Thunderbird, any others?

Also why did Harvard extension have a bad rep, Ive always associated anything with Harvard to be top notch. Thanks. great info. Also I have been trying out Empire State College just for a b.s. degree. They arnt associated with a brick and mortar school but are part of the well known SUNY school system and from are respected atleast here in upstate NY. What do you think? is it worth going there for a undergrad degree?

:

Hey! Thats my list! (ETA: Im glad I could help. Take the list and share it with friends!)

It depends on what you want to major in. If you want to major in computer science or any sort of IT/computer engineering type of field, then Id have you look at Carnegie Mellon and RPI as the best. MIT might also be good, but the CM and RPI distance learning programs are far more established. If you wanted business, Id recommend Babson or Duke or Thunderbird. Art, Id recommend SCAD.

So what are your interests?

And I actually have mixed feelings about Harvard Extension. Its rep in the past was *not* a good one, at least in New England. Ive heard that it has made vast improvements since, but I dont yet have enough proof of that to be able to say that yes, I recommend it. ETA: I think their rep is because, employers viewed their classes to not be at the same academic level as the rest of Harvard. In addition, you get a bachelor in liberal arts, rather than having a focus in a subject area, and some employers frown on that. They consider that sort of degree rightly or wrongly to be an easy way for adults to get a degree.

ETA: Business, then, at the undergraduate level (Thunderbird is only MBA.) Id have you look at the following good schools with good business programs, and good reps for their online programs:

- Babson – Penn State – Kent State, if youre in the midwest – U Delaware – U Florida – U Maryland – UMass Amherst – Rochester Institute of Tech – Rensselaer Polytechnic

Interestingly, although I might not normally recc RIT and RPI to a business major, I do for their online programs. These are solid schools, respected business programs, and because for these schools their emphasis is on tech, their online programs tend to be quite strong and well supported.

Ive also heard that Rutgers recently started an online degree program, and it does offer business. Id have you check their website.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a well known non-profit sponsor of education grants and initiatives. Recently, the Gates Foundation has teamed up with the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and four other education non-profits to fund and promote a new education initiative that takes aim at poor national graduation rates with the development and use of online learning tools.

In todays economy, the vast majority of new jobs require more than a high school diploma. However, statistics show that fewer than half of Americans under the age of thirty have a postsecondary certificate, diploma or degree.

To combat these harrowing statistics, the Gates Foundation has gifted an initial million for the development and implementation of postsecondary online courses and online learning tools. These online tools and courses will cater to community colleges and low-income students.

With online education continually expanding, many critics still wonder about its effectiveness. However, experts say that if technology is well designed, it can help tailor the learning experience to individual students, facilitate student-teacher collaboration, and assist teachers in monitoring student performance each day and in quickly fine-tuning lessons.

In many online higher education institutions as well as projects studying the implementation of online education technology at ground-school universities like Carnegie Mellon University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the use of online courses has been extremely promising.

For this reason, the Gates and Hewlett Foundations are focusing their initial efforts on higher education.  The programs members say the timing seems right for such an effort, partly because the technology of online learning is advancing rapidly. And, they add, budget-constrained colleges have a greater economic incentive to try online tools, if they are going to make headway in preparing a greater number of students for an economy that increasingly requires workers with higher levels of skills.

Gates has spoken publically in the past about the importance of utilizing technology to learn, and is a major supporter of online education and online learning.  Recently the Microsoft founder noted that, innovation is your only hope, and the only new game in town is technology.

By creating and funding this initiative, the Gates and Hewlett Foundations and fellow non-profits hope to increase access and accelerate learning through the use of online technology. In fact say Gates and Hewlett Foundation representatives, The online tools can help open up educational pathways to skills, especially for low-income young adults.

Access to new technology is often very limited for low-income students. The Gates and Hewlett Foundations hope to not only change accessibility issues for low-income or underrepresented students, but to help improve national graduation rates.
