Houston – The Houston Independent School District named its new athletics director Friday and it is a history-making decision.

Marmion Dambrino becomes the first woman in history to become the boss of HISD athletics.

“I am extremely honored,” Dambrino said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports and the Houston Chronicle. “It says a lot for HISD.

“At the end of the day, male for female, it’s a matter of getting the job done.”

Dambrino has been with HISD for 22 years.

She replaces Daryl Wade who left HISD in July to run the Houston Astros Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy.

Dambrino was Wade’s assistant during his stint as athletics director.

She held the title of senior athletics program administrator.

“This is the happiest day of my life,” Dambrino said. “It is a dream come true.”

Wade is thrilled for his former assistant.

“It’s just great,” Wade said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.
